I’m going to keep you off balance.
My name’s Sean, and I’m a writer. I’m also terrible at introductions, mainly because I think the conversation is already happening. Isn’t it?
I mostly write fictions, or as I like to call them, “fun lies.”
Somewhere in here, I’m told I’m supposed to promise you something—most likely a specific experience with my work.
Really, though, the one promise I think I can keep is what I said at the top. I’m going to keep you off balance.
The truth is, I’m not a big fan of promises. I’m used to them not coming true. Can you relate?
Something that’s been a personal mantra lately: “There are no guarantees.”
True, that is scary. Yet, it’s also liberating. There are no guarantees. Think about that. That gives us a lot of freedom. That leaves us open to a lot of surprises.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve been obsessed with ethics. How can I avoid harming others? How can I add something positive to others' lives?
The most powerful, reliable answer I’ve found: walk with them. Listen. Witness.
You’ll see a lot of that in my fiction. In the happy stories, my characters figure out how to do that for each other. In the tragedies, they don’t.
The conversation is already happening because everything is already in progress. Your life is. Mine too. The past doesn’t “start” anywhere, at least not in a way that explains our lives now.
There are no guarantees forwards or backwards.
So I’m hopping into the conversation, curious and unprepared. Hello!
Still not a guarantee, but here’s a few of the things I’ve found while I was off balance, with my tail at equal or greater elevation than my teakettle:
Delight. Hilarity. Humility. Discovery. Friendship. Love. Catharsis. Insight. Laughter. Beauty. Guidance. Healing. Hope.
I hope you’ll find things like that when you read my work. If not, then I hope you’ll find something even more exciting.
Welcome, and thank you!
